As soon as you reasonably can — ideally within the first few days, even if you feel okay. Whiplash and other soft-tissue injuries can take hours or days to show up, and in New York the No-Fault application is generally due within 30 days of the accident, so waiting can cost you both time and coverage.
Go to the ER first if you have red-flag symptoms
Call 911 or go to the emergency room for loss of consciousness, confusion, severe headache, chest or abdominal pain, trouble breathing, repeated vomiting, or numbness or weakness in your arms or legs. A chiropractor is for after emergencies are ruled out.
Why waiting is risky
Adrenaline can mask pain after a crash. Neck stiffness, headaches, shoulder pain and low back pain often appear a day or more later. An early evaluation catches problems sooner and creates a record close to the date of the accident, which matters for insurance claims.
What the first visit looks like
We start with the story of the accident and your symptoms, then examine you with orthopedic, neurological and movement testing. Imaging is used only if the exam calls for it. You leave with a plain-English plan, and in most cases care can begin the same day. What happens at a first visit.
The New York No-Fault clock
New York No-Fault pays reasonable and necessary medical expenses regardless of fault. The application is generally due within 30 days of the accident; confirm your deadlines with your insurer or attorney. Fusion accepts No-Fault — bring your claim number, insurer information and police report number if you have one. No-Fault steps.
